5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com: "Eloquent and entertaining!", April 9, 2012"Tricks in Captivity is a novel that will appeal to you no matter what your literary tastes are. Julie's writing style is clear, concise, and genuine, and you'll truly find yourself empathizing with the heroine as she endures and conquers challenge after challenge during her overseas adventures. The book has a very "personal" feel to it such that I almost felt flattered by the narrator's openness. There's a tension in her descriptions of events, almost as though she's not recounting her tale, but experiencing it right then and there. Put this one on your summer reading list!" By
4.0 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com: "An unexpected adventure", March 4, 2012ByC. Brown
"I think it's a pretty good bet that you've never read a book quite like "Tricks in Captivity" before. The action takes place in North, Central, and South America in a world resembling earth in the 1990s where actual historical figures coexist with stand-ins for other historical figures. The first part of the book reads like the diary of an idealistic young woman who frequently encounters disappointment and frustration in pursuing a work program in Mexico and Brazil. The reader who accompanies the main character through this period of difficulty will be rewarded in the last part of the book as he or she suddenly realizes that the story has veered into thriller territory and that the pages are turning faster and faster."

Whether you have experienced the challenges of living abroad or not, Locascio's honest writing style draws you in and brings to life the struggles of finding one's way as a young professional. You feel her hope, frustrations and joy as she describes daily life during her time in South America. While you feel for the character's struggles, you often giggle at the humor with which she deals with them. The exciting adventure at the end makes it difficult to put the book down. It is a very thoughtful and enjoyable read! Highly recommend!
